Massage and why you should have one (a day, week, month, quarter…) Massage’s positive effect on the body is not and cannot be denied, but the effects are often underestimated by people who have never received one or sometimes even summarily dismissed.
Massage is an effective, natural, drug free, noninvasive way to treat many of the irregularities associated with the physical stress that everyday life puts on our bodies “My Definition”. The State of Florida defines massage as the manipulation of the soft tissues of the human body with the hand, foot, arm or elbow, whether or not such manipulation is aided by hydrotherapy, including colonic irrigation, or thermal therapy; any electrical or mechanical device; or the application to the human body of a chemical or herbal preparation.
What makes massage have such a powerful effect on the body? Let’s start with the way skin reacts to massage. The skin and its appendages are, in fact, the body’s largest organ. Massage stimulates blood flow to the surface of the skin, helping to keep it healthy and supple. Bringing nutrients to the skins surface and taking away cellular waste helps to keep our skin in healthy condition.
Our muscles are another very important part of our body’s makeup. They are also responsible for much of our shape and for our movements. Massage helps bring muscles that are too tight to their proper length. Short muscles are over contracted, and muscles that are too long are overstretched, but most importantly, both cause musculoskeletal discomfort and pain, starting a cycle that will continue to expand without being corrected. The good news about that is that a lot of the musculoskeletal pain that we feel is due to the way our bodies respond to pain and not the original cause of the pain. Why is that good news? Because a lot of pain is caused by perfectly healthy muscle tissue lacking only blood flow and unrestricted enervation. The benefit of massage is increased circulation and blood flow to the muscles, which will help break the pain cycle.
Another amazing benefit of massage is at the same time it is reducing our heart rate and lowering blood pressure, it increases circulation to the extremities. Many diseases could be curtailed by those three things.
Now we have talked about how massage improves the health of our skin, releases tight muscles, breaks pain cycles, increases circulation, reduces heart rate and lowers blood pressure. These are a few of the many benefits of massage therapy. I know, it sounds almost too good to be true. When you read all the benefits, it almost makes you think massage can stop people from aging! I wish – then I could work less and charge more.
Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, is credited with the theory of Medical Gymnastics, which states that exercises are not merely sport but, along with diet and massage, are essential ingredients in preventative medicine. How did he know 2,400 years ago what we seem unable to fathom today? In Hippocrates’ time, with the exception of traumatic death, people who ate well remained active and got massage, lived longer.
In this age of obesity and disease, it is time to return to the simple truths of the past and start taking responsibility for our own health. With all these benefits, why is massage not a larger part of healthcare? Maybe part of the problem is that massage is not a pill. We now live in a time where drug manufacturers and insurance companies have taken over the healthcare system, allowing underwriters and untrained people to make decisions about our lives, not with regard for our health and well-being but strictly their own bottom line.
Back on track with massage. Historically, massage dates back 5,000 years. If you start getting massage, no, all your troubles will not go away (unless, perhaps, they’re all muscular), but besides the health benefits, massage feels good, is very relaxing, and done right, stimulates the production of endorphins, giving you a feeling of euphoria.
An easy way to begin taking ownership of our own health is eating right and getting massages regularly. The benefits I am writing about have been proven many times over. With all the money we spend trying to feel better, give something that truly will make you feel better a shot, while doing something healthy for yourself.
